What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is part of a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Put simply, the URL is what people types into the browser’s address bar to go to your website. For example, if you wish to visit Facebook, you have to type “www.facebook.com” into the address bar. Another example is, if you want to visit Yahoo Mail, you type in “mail.yahoo.com”.The part between the two dots (facebook and yahoo, respectively) are what we refer to as the domain name.

For a website, a domain name serves as your website’s unique identity. This tells the computer which website you want to visit to. The technicalities about Domain Names will be explained in a separate article.

But why do I need a Domain Name for my Website?

While there are a lot of free domain names available on the web, these options are usually limited. They can also be quite long, and harder to remember. Some would only allow a few TLDs (Top Level Domains) to be used. While some would require you to put your website’s name as an extension to their own domain name.

By having your own domain name, your business will have a unique website and personalized email addresses. This will not only make your business look more professional and more credible, but it will also be a unique identifier to your business. People will recall this easier because it connects to your business name, and at the same time, you’ll be positioned better in the Search Engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Think of your website as a house in a physical world, and the domain name is your house’s physical address.
